Venom Immunotherapy

What is Venom Immunotherapy?

Venom immunotherapy (VIT) is a highly effective, long-term treatment for individuals with severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to insect stings from hymenoptera species including:

- Honeybees

- Mixed vespids (yellow jackets, white-faced hornets, yellow hornet)

- Paper wasps

- Fire ants (separate protocol)

VIT helps your immune system become tolerant to insect venom, reducing the risk of severe reactions to future stings.

Benefits of VIT:

- >90% effective in preventing life-threatening reactions to stings

- Reduced anxiety around insect exposure

- Can provide lifelong protection after treatment completion

- Significantly lowers risk of anaphylaxis on re-sting

Risks and Side Effects:

While VIT is generally safe, possible side effects include:

Local reactions (common):

- Redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site

- Typically resolve within hours

Systemic Reactions (rare):

- Hives, flushing, and nasal symptoms

- Asthma symptoms

- Anaphylaxis (occurs <1% of injections, emergency care protocols are in place)

Delayed Reactions:

- Fatigue, low-grade fever, or generalized itch hours later (rare)

All patients are monitored for 30 minutes after each injection.

Length of Treatment:

- Build-up Phase: 1-3 months (or longer depending on protocol)

- Maintenance Phase: Continued for 3-5 years

- High-risk patients, lifelong therapy may be considered

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Will I still need to carry an epinephrine auto-injector?

- Yes, even with VIT, accidental stings can still cause mild to moderate reactions. Carry your auto-injector at all times.

Can I stop VIT early?

- Completing at least 3-5 years is strongly recommended for long term protection. Early discontinuation may increase risk of relapse.

Can children receive venom immunotherapy?

- Yes. VIT is safe and effective in children and reduces the risk of future severe reactions.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

- VIT can be continued during pregnancy but it is not typically started during pregnancy unless the risk of sting exposure is very high.

What if I miss a dose?

- Contact our office. A missed dose may require adjusting your next injection dose for safety.

Does insurance cover VIT?

- Most insurance plans cover venom immunotherapy. Our team can assist with any insurance questions.
